Personally appeared before the undersigned, a notary public in and for said County, James Avaline of a lawful age and a creditable citizen, who being duly sworn deposeth and saith, That he has resided for several years at Peru in the State of Indiana, speaks the Miami Indian language, and is familiar with the business of said Indians.
That the chief of said Indians held councils in the spring and summer of 1846, to consider about emigrating West to their new homes, but that said Miami Indians did not commence assembling to emigrate West, until after the arrival of the U.S. troops under the command of Capn Jouett some time ^in the latter part of September orabout the first of October AD 1846. That said Indians were much opposed to emigrating West, and did not assemble or commence assembling for that purpose until after the arrival of the U.S. troops under the command of Capn Jouett some time ^in the latter part of September orabout the first of Octr as aforesaid, when they immediately embarked and departed for their new Homes.
