− | + | Sir, | |
− | + | Your letter of the 12th ult. is first received. One month ago I opened my camp for the collection of the Miami for Emigration, in the county of Kosciusko--and succeeded in getting together the few in that region, amounting to 30. I then removed my camp to Miami County, near Peru, and went to see the remainder of the Indians and told them I was ready to receive them, and to emigrate. But they are disposed to act just as they did last year if possible, and put off and put off to wait their own time. Last year they detained us four months at a heavy expense, and will no doubt if allowed to do so, do it again. I now have a camp ready, within a few miles of the Indians, and 10 teams and hands at an expense of 20[cents] a day--besides my own time and the feeding of the 30 now in camp. I went in person with an interpreter & notified the Indians of my readiness to remove but they say they are not yet ready. What am I to do? Remain at such an expense as this, to wait their time--or is it not sufficient to give them an offer of assistance to move into camp and if they refuse leave them? From all the information I can get, there are only 20 more than I now have in camp, to be removed--without those who removed last year and others allowed | |
