Sir.
I have returned from my trip west with the Miami Indians, and beg leave to trouble you with the following statement.
I have in my hands the sum of $220, which was furnished for the purpose of purchasing iron and steel for shop for Miamies.
At the time I left the Miami country west Col Vaughan had not received his tabular statement or any order on me for means, and I thought it best to take the money to St. Louis and pay it over to the superintendant there- on my arrival at St. Louis I called at the office of the superintendant and was informed that Maj. Harvey was absent. I purposed to pay over the money to Mr. Haverty, the clerk in the office, but was informed by him that he was not authorized to give me a receipt for it and advised me to bring money with me and settle with your office for it.-- Now what shall I do with it?-- I can pay it over to the [Receiver] here; I can forward a draft to Washington and have it arranged then, or I can deposit it in one of the Govt. Depositories, but the expense of doing so would seem too great.
The contractors for removing the Miamies refuse to allow me for expenses while employed in the emigration, or on my return home after the emigration was completed, in consequence of which no settlement has been had with them either for my salary or expenses.
