Office of Miami Eel River Sub Agency

Fort Wayne 8 th Oct 1846

Sir

It being absolutely necessary that I should have some person that I could rely upon to oversee the contractor and be certain that they faithfully fulfilled their contract as far as feeding the Indians is concerned and who would make a statement under oath of the Miami in which the Indians had been fed and treated. I have appointed William B. White who has gone in with the Boats with directions from me to visit each boat frequently and ascertain whether all their wants are supported or not. This I was compelled to do, or as the contractors care at large whenever I should find it impossible to attend to all things myself. One of the contractors Mr. Ewing objects to my having an assistant of this kind, and the consequence is I am repaying the expense of it from my own means and shall do so. The whole charge will not exceed $150 and if you see people I wish you would direct the contracts to say it.

Very respectfully

Your Obedt Servant
