Aug 20 1846 <br> Sir, <br> On Wednesday last the Miamis, in part assembled their numbers from Peru in council, to give the agent + acting contractor a final answer relative to emigrating this fall. They would not visit the contractor's camp, + indeed could not all be assembled anywhere, so fearful were they that advantage would be taken of their assemblage to force them out of the country. The acting contractor took umbrage at their refusal to visit his camp & did [not?] attend the council. I was not present at the council, although sent for by the Indians -- I arrived on the ground however about two hours afterwards. The Indians there informed me what their answer in "talk" with the agent had been + requested me to write it down + send it to you, fearing it might be misrepresented by the agent. Sickness has hitherto prevented my transcribing my [illegible] notes of it, to comply with their request.
