a different course adopted toward those people from the one which this threat of "force" would indicate. I cannot but trust that you have never authorized such threats. + [induce? deduce?] that they have not been used. Certain I am that their use will destroy all the good intentions of the Indians, & that what might have effected peacably by persuasion + reason, will under such threats not be effected at all or if at all, with great trouble + expense.
