The Present Contractors agreed to permit them to retain the sum of $15,000; with int: on account of advances they alldged to have made on the purchase of this contract of Mssr Dowling & others; But we protest against any larger amt being withheld from the $55,000; (agreed to be paid for the Execution of this contract) by Mssrs Peebles or Robinson, or others; they agreed to retain this amt, & no more, and released to us all their interest in said contract, (as you will see by reference to the copies thereof furnished you); nor did the Contract [illeg] authorize the payment of money, or acceptances of drafts by the Government, until after the delivery of the Indians! The suspicions and illegal "acceptances" of Capt. jack Tyler & Co. we trust will not be suffered to prejudice the labour & risk of men who are working hard to fulfill a contract & carry out the wishes of the Government.
