Sir: as contractor for the removal of the Miami Indians, in accordance with the engagements entered into on the 6th day of May last, I have made two visits to the Indian country, the result of the first of which I apprized you in my letter dated June 4, 1844.

The second visit was commenced Sept. 4, and, on my return (this day,) I deem it proper to give you, briefly, an account of my progress in meeting the wishes of the Department.

I found Mr. Hamilton (the Agent) very anxious to carry out your views; and, I beg leave to add, that much of the success which has attended my efforts is due to that gentleman, whose zeal is only surpassed by the influence which he wields over the tribe. From the first, he has acted like a faithful officer of the government, and a first time, and humane friend of the Miamies.
