Osage river Sub Agency
30th June 1847
Sir
application has been made to me by Leonidas A. Vaughan, for pay for his services as issuing commissary, for the Miami Inds of this sub agency--you are aware for that he was regularly appointed, and his appointment was duly confirmed by you. He has been employed since the month of November last and to this day has received no remuneration.
There seems to be a difference of opinion as to from what source his pay is to be derived--some contend that it is to be refunded by the contractors for removing and subsisting the Miami Indians, whilst others say that it should come from the contingent expences of the Indian department, under the circumstances sir, I take the liberty of applying to you as the surest method of obtaining the information & means required--in order to satisfy the demands of said Leonidas A. Vaughan
I have the honor to be Sir
your most obt servant
