I hold one third of the contract entered into by Dowling with the Government for the Emigration of the Miamies, and although I am so interested I have not joined with my associates in complaining about what has been done, yet I do feel justified in making an effort to avoid the payment of the salary of this commissary or inspector of rations. Had the contractors felt themselves bound under the contract to pay the expense alluded to, a person every way competent to the discharge of that duty could have been employed at a much less salary as the rations are issued every ten days, should this salary be allowed it would amount to nearly twenty five dollars for each days actual employment, which appears extravagant, wheather it be paid by the contractors or by the Govnerment. I feel disposed to comply cheerfully with every condition of the contract and am sattisfied that no disposition is felt by
